Did my time in the retail world when I was younger, and I can tell you that it's not going to get any better.

In the working world of retail, BE NICE. That's what you're supposed to do - When you encounter someone like this, it is usually best, to politely say something like, "I'm sorry you're having trouble - I'll see if I can get someone from management to help you."
That way, you haven't been rude, you're covering your own a**, and you've alerted store management of a problem customer - It's usually their job to handle difficult situations like this - NOT YOURS.
